Not so long ago, the Super Bowl used to be an experience people the world over could come together in friendly rivalry. Now it’s devolved into a lethal spectacle where the halftime performer, the HALFTIME PERFORMER approved by the NFL, is receiving death threats and the former President and First Lady are the object of the oldest, most racist, and dehumanizing trope in the book.
This is where we are, United States?
I’ve seen posts creating a false dichotomy pitting Bad Bunny against Jelly Roll. Why? This only serves to deepen the division. Both are talented musicians. Both have done the requisite internal work necessary to overcome challenging circumstances unique to their lives that are common to man.
Yea, there are obvious differences in their ethnicities, their preferred genre of music, and fan bases; but those differences pale in comparison to the greater good they serve humanity and their God-given talent. It’s one thing to see their glory, but far more valuable to see the overlap in their personal journeys. This is America. There is plenty of room for everyone. EVERY. ONE.
As for the dehumanizing content, and I say this with every fiber of my being to those who would consider you and me friends, if you’re okay with it, find the racism amusing, or don’t see why it’s offensive, I’m profoundly saddened by and for you. I had hoped and believed you were better than that. So much better than that. I don’t need you to admit or deny anything. God knows and sees.
I want you back, but the racism and bigotry have to go. Y’all are better than this.
I still want the best for you. I believe you can abandon that line of thinking because the alternative, while now might seem like stepping into the unknown void, it’s not. It’s far more enriching than steeping in hatred.
Happy Super Bowl Sunday, beautiful people!
